Turkish Breakfast: A Morning Ritual Worth Waking Up For
In Türkiye, breakfast – kahvaltı – is not a quick bite before the day begins. It is a slow, generous meal shared around a table full of small plates, and for many people it is the most important meal of the day.
What's on the table
A classic Turkish breakfast includes white cheese and aged kaşar, black and green olives, tomatoes and cucumbers, butter, honey with kaymak (clotted cream), homemade jams and fresh bread or simit. Eggs are often served as menemen, cooked with tomatoes and peppers, or with sucuk, a spiced sausage.
Tea, always
Turkish tea, served in small tulip-shaped glasses, accompanies the whole meal. It is brewed strong in a double teapot and diluted to taste with hot water – and a second glass is always offered.
