The Turkish Hammam: A Centuries-Old Ritual of Renewal
The hammam has been part of daily life in Anatolia for centuries. More than a bath, it is a place to slow down, cleanse the body and rest the mind.
How it works
The ritual begins in a warm room, where the body slowly relaxes on the heated marble navel stone (göbek taşı). Once the skin is warm, an attendant scrubs it with a traditional kese mitt, then covers you in a cloud of soap foam for a gentle massage.
Before and after
Drink plenty of water before and after your hammam, and give yourself time to rest afterwards – a cup of herbal tea in a quiet lounge is the perfect ending.
